The “Beast of the Southeast” is a 1.5 mile quad oval speedway that seats 167,000 in Concord, North Carolina otherwise known as Lowe's Motor Speedway. Built in 1959, Lowe's Motor Speedway was the first motor sport’s venue to host nighttime racing. Considered to the “home base of Nascar” with 90% of all teams being within 50 miles of Lowe's. In 1999, Lowes purchased the naming rights to the speedway making it the first track in the country to be named with a corporate sponsor.
In October, 2007, current Chairman and original owner, Bruton Smith, threatened to close Lowe's Motor Speedway if the City would not allow a drag strip to be built adjacent to the speedway. The Concord City Council has rezone the area prohibiting the strip to be built. This rezoning was done due to concerns of residents from noise. At this time, Bruton Smith continues to search for land in Metrolina.
